1st Annual VT Wake Newsletter: 2011

Happy Holidays from VT Wake!

This year I wanted to start a new tradition. Families send out Christmas Cards and businesses sound out Annual Reports, so I feel like VT Wake should have some sort of newsletter to keep alumni, family, friends, and sponsors up-to-date and in-the-loop with what is going on with the VT Wakeboard Club.
2011 was another great year full of lots of wakeboarding, trips, and good times. We kicked off the season with a big move and purchased a new (to us) club boat in North Carolina. Because of the recession, we found ourselves boat-less. We had a few potential options but in the end decided that purchasing a boat with the money our club had saved over the past few years would be best in the long run, giving us independence and the possibility of getting a good amount of our money back down the road when we resell it (versus making payments and being left with nothing). The boat we found was a 1990 Supra Sunsport. We chose this boat specifically because it is notorious for having one of the best hulls for making a good wake and being one of the more spacious boats for our price range. We used the Supra several times in the spring at Claytor and did a few weekend trips to Smith Mtn. Lake, riding behind the Schrein’s Supra 24 SSV.
This summer we did some work on the club Supra, which definitely had some issues, being an old boat. We battled through some mechanical problems that kept it off the water into the start of the Fall Semester, but thankfully we were able to keep riding behind Jeff Goldblum’s boat at Claytor and my family’s boat as well as the Schrein’s boat at Smith Mtn. Lake. We did lots of trips to SML while the club boat was out of commission and we can’t thank the Schrein’s enough for being so generous with letting us stay at their house, providing us with food, and letting us use their boat. Luckily, we sorted out most of the problems with the club boat and got back to riding at Claytor before the end of the season. This winter I am hoping to do some more projects to the club boat that will make it even better for this spring and the future.
VT Wake had a strong year competitively. We placed 6th at Alt Games (USA Wakeboard Collegiate Nationals) and had an amazing time. The event was held in San Diego, CA and was very organized. CBS covered the event, leading to Joel Wagner and Edan Fletcher being on national TV. In the fall, we hosted Eastern Regionals at Indian Pointe Marina at Smith Mtn. Lake. We put a lot of hard work into organizing it, and it turned out great. We had a solid showing by NC State, Kentucky, Tennessee, and of course VT. Everything ran very smoothly and VT placed 1st overall. Big thanks to Indian Pointe/Tim Wray and the Schrein’s for making the event a success. We also were working with Red Bull in hosting a rail jam on campus at the Duck Pond, and would have featured the legendary Parks Bonifay at VT! Unfortunately, the school denied our efforts, but we are hoping that we can work to make something like this happen in the future.
We had some great additions to the club this year, especially with the girls. The amount of quality riders and good people in our club keeps growing. We are looking forward to the spring when we plan on attending Nationals again, possibly hosting a double up contest, and having fun a ton of fun on the lake. Stay up to date with everything we do by checking the VT wake blog, Http://vtwakeboarding.blogspot.com, or by checking our Twitter (VTwake).

Thanks for all of the support,

Parks Bonifay

Even though the VT Wake Rail Jam with Red Bull and Parks Bonifay didnt work out, it is awesome to see Parks still throwing down. Check it out...double invert AND a handle-pass spin, unreal!

Regionals Results

It was an awesome weekend at Smith Mountain Lake. The rain held off and Regionals ran without a hitch. VT Wakeboarding had a very strong showing and came out with the team victory. Huge thanks to everyone who helped make it happen, especially Stultz Clothing, Mr. Schrein for letting us pull with their sick Black Supra 24ssv and Magnum Marine/Indian Pointe Marina for hosting the competition AND selling the Schrein's their awesome boat!

nationals day 3-finals

today concluded this years nationals..there were cameras everywhere and the weather was nice. it was really sick and felt super legit. edan rode early and placed fourth in mens c. joel rode after in mens a semis and had a sick run. tantrum, sw tantrum, perfect whirly, scarecrow, method, turn, frontroll fall, roll to blind, switch raley, huge kgb. he advanced to the finals and ended up placing sixth overall in mens a and fourth overall in wakeskate. tennessee took the team title which didnt surprise anyone. they were sick. they had their riders land a handle pass invert in mens a, c, and d and qualified for finals in five or more divisions. nuts. chico got second and uf got third. uw madison and uw lacrosse got fourth and fifth and vtwake got sixth. not bad. really proud of how everyone rode and hopefully we can build on this next year. i really believe if we had brought our best possible team that we could have placed second or third. have a great summer everyone and remember to turn  on cbs at two o clock saturday june twenty fifth and three o clock june twenty sixth to see edan and joel and all the rest of the finals action from this year.

nationals day 2

day two in san diego, joel placed second in his heat of five, with the top three advancing. so he should have a pretty solid position in the semis for mens a tomorrow morning. mike and valerie didnt advance but rode pretty well. they both tied for seventh in their divisions. edan had another good run and posted the second highest score in mens c, qualifying for tomorrow. the top four scores in that division were all within eleven points out of a hundred so that final should be really good. i didnt have my best run and didnt qualify for mens but was third in my heat so i tied for fifth. lastly, joel somehow snuck into the finals in wakeskate which was pretty awesome. so we still have joel to ride semis for mens a, and have two riders in the finals tomorrow. not bad.

nationals day 1

day one of competition went well. joel advanced in wakeskate, valerie in womens b, mike in mens d, edan in mens c, and me in mens b. joel hasnt ridden yet in mens a. edan killed it today and qualified high for tomorrow. we are doing pretty well so far and having a great time out here. ill post more updates as the weekend goes on. mike rides first thing tomorrow in the semis, then joel after that, then valerie, then lunch, edan, and me. there is some crazy competition out here but we are holding our own.

VT wake officially has a boat!

Joel, Patrick, Mike, and I went down to Lake Norman yesterday to pick it up. Maroon 1990 Supra Sunsport 21 ft. We took a couple quick sets behind it with no ballast and everyone is pretty pumped on it. We will be doing lots of work to it this summer, but shes ready to ride!

So I'm really not sure if anyone reads this...

But nonetheless, I'm going to update it... VT Wake has bought a boat! We just picked  up a 1990 Supra Sunsport that's in fantastic condition for being 21 years old! I'll post up pics and maybe a video of it soonish. It's not the prettiest, but when we get the money we may wrap it and throw a tower on instead of the extended pylon. Nonetheless,We're all stoked to shred our faces off behind it!

Joel Wagner 2010

It's missing a few of his key tricks, as well as a few new ones he landed this year while the camera wasn't running, but it's still sick riding, enjoy!
